Abstract

Monographella albescens (Thüm.) comb.nov., the perfect state of Rhynchosporium oryzae Hashioka & Yokogi ( = Gerlachia oryzae (Hashioka & Yokogi) W. Gams), the rice-leaf scald fungus, is described and illustrated. The taxonomy of both the perfect and imperfect state is discussed. Scanning electron microscopy confirms that the conidiogenous cells are annellidic. Optimum temperature for perithecial production was 26° and the addition of fresh rice leaves to the culture media was a requirement for perithecial production. The fungus is homothallic.
