Abstract

A 1993 Italian law sparing people with AIDS from being prosecuted or jailed for a crime has spawned numerous criminal activities committed by AIDS patients, known as the AIDS Gang. The law, originally passed to spare government money to build separate facilities for AIDS prisoners, has outraged the Italian public. Such attempts at dealing with potential AIDS prisoners and the cost of their incarceration are clumsy attempts to avoid dealing with the controversial subject. Compassionate release programs have merit if handled with reason and should not be discouraged because of the Italian problem.
