Abstract

Abstract Bilateral cortical spreading depression (SD) induced both before training and before testing of a passive avoidance response in rats produced a marked impairment of learning. Together with appropriate control groups, this finding does not lend support to the hypothesis that SD acts as a stimulus that gains control over the conditioned response, but rather that SD interferes with either cortical or subcortical memory processes, or both.
