Abstract

The antipsychotic effect of neuroleptics appears to depend upon dopaminergic blockade. Neither prolactin nor drug levels are helpful in the clinical situation. The value of neuroleptics both as an acute treatment for schizophrenic episodes and as a prophylactic against relapse is undoubted but even with assured compliance, these drugs cannot be considered as curative and the prognosis is often limited.
