Abstract

This qualitative study was conducted with the aim of analyzing the access to prenatal care at the Basic Health Care Program under the perspective of pregnant women who were attended to at a Basic Health Unit in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews. Transcription and thematic analysis of the interviews gave rise to five analytical categories:forms of access to prenatal service; obstacles to begin and/or to continue care; access to multiprofessional care; access to reference systems; and access to Health Education activities. The results suggest that some aspects of that service should be adapted to provide the real needs of women who use it and to strengthen the links with the professionals working in that unit.
