Abstract

Abstract We have measured quasi-elastic neutron scattering of the hydrogen in stage 2 HNO 3 intercalated in graphite. In the semi-incommensurate phase we have observed rotational motion in which the number of rotating molecules varies with temperature. In the liquid phase translational 2-dimensional motion appears in addition to the rotational one, with a jump vector equal to the in-plane lattice vector of the graphite lattice. The translational diffusion constant shows a critical behavior.
