Abstract

Abstract This paper analyses the factors involved in constructing thin scintillation counters with large surface area, to obtain maximum light collection together with uniformity. Measurements of the relevant parameters have been made and principles for optimum design have been sormulated. Calculations of efficiency show satisfactory agreement with experiment. Two types of counters have been constructed and used successfully to detect relativistic particles.
