Abstract

Abstract Hypocotyl elongation in seedlings of white mustard is inhibited by light. Water stress imposed by mannitol, sucrose, and polyethylene glycol (PEG) solutions causes an additional inhibition. However, in light this inhibition is smaller than in dark indicating an increase of growth potential by light. Up to a molecular weight of about 6000 this light effect decreases logarithmically with increasing molecular weight of the osmotica.
