Abstract

Abstract Routine serum immunoelectrophoresis of different sera in agar with intermediate electroend osmosis revealed an abnormally shaped IgM arc. Immunoelectrophoresis of these sera in agarose, however, gave a distinct biarcuate IgM precipitation line of partial identity. The anodal arc of the biarcuate precipitation line is produced by low molecular weight (7S) IgM while the cathodal arc is produced by high molecular weight (19S) IgM. The existence of two molecular IgM forms and their antigenic difference can be demonstrated without elaborate isolation procedures, by serum immunoelectrophoresis in an agarose support media of minimal electroendosmosis.
