Abstract

Abstract The wettability of Al 2O 3 by molten aluminum and Al–La alloy was measured with an improved sessile drop technique which prevented the oxidation of aluminum. The interface between Al–La alloys and Al 2O 3 was analyzed by using an electron probe microanalyzer. Results show that Al 2O 3 is wetted by molten aluminum when rare earth element La is added in and the contact angle decreases from 90.5° to less than 80°. This phenomenon mainly results from the La 2O 3 produced at the interface by reaction of La and Al 2O 3.
