Abstract

Female rats that had been handled in infancy or left undisturbed were subjected to electric footshock at 90 days of age and the levels of adrenal tyrosine hydroxylase determined. Animals that had been handled in infancy had lower basal levels of adrenal tyrosine hydroxylase activity but showed greater activity following acute stress. The nonhandled animals had greater enzyme activity prior to stress and also following prolonged stress.
