Abstract

Abstract The microangiographic pattern of isolated intestinal villi in simple, small bowel obstruction was studied. In villi obtained from the bowel that had been obstructed for 1 day, the capillary network was almost completely preserved and the stem veins were dilated. At the end of 2 to 4 days of obstruction, the capillary bed was progressively reduced, and finally consisted solely of some short coils connecting the arcade arterioles with the stem veins; the latter became increasingly dilated the longer obstruction lasted. The relation of these changes to the decreased diffusional absorption occurring in small bowel obstruction is discussed briefly.
