Abstract

Abstract Reactions of 1,2,3,4-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (T 4CDD) on fly ash with NO 2, SO 2, and SO 3 individually in air and with a mixed gas atmosphere of NO 2, SO 2, HCl at 5% by volume in air were investigated using laboratory experiments designed to simulate stack emission conditions in municipal incinerators. With mixed gas atmosphere, both nitration and chlorination reactions occurred at 150°C with formation of only pentachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (PCDD) and the nitro-T 4CDD. Addition of H 2O vapor to this reaction did not affect the nature of products but enhanced extent of nitration over chlorination. No reaction products or oxidation products were detected through treatment of T 4CDD on fly ash with SO 2 or SO 3 alone in air between 30 to 300°C.
