Abstract The induced alpha radioactivity in gold produced by protons with energy more than 600 MeV has been studied. It was found that besides a 4.1 h half-life attributed to 149Tb, other alpha radionucleides with half-lives about 7 and 19 min are produced in important quantities. The radionucleides with the 7 min half-life are probably 150Dy and 53Ho and, with the 19 min half-life, it is 151Dy. The 7 min and 19 min radionucleides were measured and yields in relation to 149Tb were found to be 2.62 and 1.22, respectively. These yields were compared with the calculated values using Rudstam's formula. A list of other alpha radionucleides below gold is also given, and a probability for their production and measurement is calculated.
