Abstract

Abstract This paper reviews the optical NDE techniques, known as ESPI, Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry and Shearography, in terms of their ability to measure deflections or displacements and their derivatives, as well as detect and quantify flaws. Deflections or displacements are obviously surface effects while flaws or defects could be on the surface, in the subsurface or the interior surface of practical plant such as reactors, pressure vessels etc. Examples of quantified ESPI and Shearography are included in the paper, such as the deflection of beams, flat plates welded at the end of cylindrical vessels, damaged or dented industrial gas containers, pitting on the inside surface of vessels, debonds of composite structures etc.
