Abstract

Abstract The present article reports a simulation of the different channels which govern the gaseous oxidation of SO 2 into H 2SO 4. A mathematical model has been developed to trace the evolution of 80 different chemical species involved in 157 chemical reactions relevant to the above transformation. In slightly polluted tropospheric air 33% of SO 2 is converted into H 2SO 4 over a period of 24 h. About 8.6% of the H 2SO 4 thus created may result of the action of alkenes, by the way of their Criegee intermediates, if the alkene concentration is equal or superior to 10 ppbv. Modifications introduced by different polluting conditions are considered.
