Abstract

Abstract Sites selected internationally to be reserves for research purposes fall into two main groups: (a) representative sites, which in sum should include one or more examples of every type of ecosystem, and (b) special sites, containing a feature of some outstanding interest. The list of sites selected internationally is not simply the sum of lists of nationally selected sites, although it will show little if any difference in the list of representative sites. Differences will lie almost entirely in the list of special sites. International selection may supplement and enhance national selections, but it cannot replace them.
