Abstract

Abstract The action of the coumarin-type drugs and related compounds is reviewed with particular reference to their “prothrombinopenic” effects, to their metabolism and excretion, and to the many variables relevant to their actions which are pertinent to their practical therapeutic use. The coagulation and hemostatic mechanism is considered in some detail, and clinical laboratory aspects and guides to therapy are discussed. Other practical aspects of management are reviewed, including orientation and objectives, contraindications, advice to patients and antidotal measures. Special emphasis is placed on the importance of individualization in management, and of complete comprehension on the part of the physician regarding many physiologic, pharmacologie and pathologic features pertinent to anticoagulant therapy.
