Abstract

Abstract Myelinated cultures of newborn mouse cerebellum maintained 18–24 days in vitro were exposed to nutrient fluid containing methyl mercuric acetate. Severe vacuolar degeneration was observed in nerve cells, particularly in granule and Purkinje cells. Axons and myelin sheaths also underwent a considerable degree of degeneration. Examination of fine structure revealed an extensive degeneration of cytoplasmic organelles of nerve cells with sparing of nuclear structures.
