Abstract

Abstract An analysis is presented for the transient response of hanging curtains clamped at three edges. A hanging curtain is replaced by an equivalent membrane, the equation of motion of which is derived. The free vibration of the membrane is analyzed theoretically and its transient response when subjected to a rectangularly varying point force is also studied by using Galerkin's method. The present method is applied to a square or rectangular membrane; the free vibration and the transient response to a force acting at an arbitrary point are calculated numerically for the membrane, and the effects of the tens parameter, the side ratio and the location of a point of action on the response are studied.
