Abstract

Abstract Studies on both pure isolated derivatives and mixed tissues have shown that trophectoderm and primitive endoderm lineages of the mouse exhibit cell-lineage-specific patterns of DNA methylation, which are manifest as a striking global underemethylation of the DNA in these tissues. In this review we describe the derivation of cell lineages and the DNA methylation patterns in extraembryonic cell lineages, consider when and how these patterns are established during development, and discuss their possible biological significance.
