Abstract

Abstract Nuclear physics has long played a dominating role in physical sciences and attracted the particular interest of two generations of physicists. In many cases the experience previously gained in nuclear physics has found new and unexpected applications in other branches of science such as chemistry and biology. Electron spectroscopy, a new field of study pioneered by the author of the present article, has recently attracted widespread interest. It too has its origin mainly in nuclear physics and promises to be of outstanding importance for the future development of chemical analysis.
