Pesticide use|nonuse in the production and distribution of produce has become an important public policy issue. It is also a marketing issue for certain firms. This article provides an overview of relevant research on the topic. It is apparent that the current structure and purpose of USDA grades and standards is not the most appropriate vehicle for providing market participants with information regarding pesticides in|on produce. Particularly pressing is the need for further research focused on how the market system and|or structure can facilitate and clarify the issue for policymakers and market participants. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
