Starting from the objective of comprehending the Missa Afro-Brasileira (de Batuque e Acalanto) of Carlos Alberto Pinto Fonseca, and having in mind its interpretation in a process of preparation and performance, this paper presents theoretical, historical and technical resources as well as points out elements of interpretation as subsidies for the developmentof such processo Five chapters are presented. Even though they focus the piece in question, the chapters approach di:fferentsubjects that are part of its universe. The first chapter, based on interviews, presents biographica1 data as well as an outline of his relationship with the masterpiece. The second chapter approaches the mass/music relationship inside the liturgical and historica1 contexts. In the third chapter there is a reflection on the folldore, nationalism and syncretism that are in the masterpiece. The score analysis is the fourth chapter's theme and is approached by parameters of form, pitch and rhythm. Conduding this work, the fi:fthchapter presents the masterpiece's interpretational elements, besides a varied number of suggestions for its preparation and execution. This 1ast chapter, besides being the prime objective of the work, justities alI the effort of its realization.
