Abstract

Abstract The Académie des Sciences was founded three hundred years ago, and it is thus one of the two oldest scientific societies in the world. Unlike its contemporary, the Royal Society, the Académie had a long list of duties and regulations, and was lavishly endowed by King Louis xiv. This article describes the early years of the Académie, and also the publication of the first scientific periodical.
