Abstract

Abstract Grain growth and particle-matrix interaction were examined in NiAl composites containing in situ alumina particles at 1200 °C. The composites were produced by vacuum hot-pressing of the elemental components, in which alumina particles were produced by a displacive reaction of partially oxidized Ni and/or partially oxidized aluminum powders. The volume fraction of the particles varied from 3 to 23 vol% Al 2O 3. A limiting grain growth was found in composites containing low fractions of alumina, whereas the composites containing high alumina showed no appreciable growth.
