Abstract

Abstract Analysis of the possible mechanisms of the reaction K + Br 2 → K + + Br 2 − near the threshold is presented. It is assumed that the valence electron of an alkali atom is transferred to the halogen molecule at the intermolecular distance, depending upon the vertical electron affinity of the halogen molecule. Deactivation of the vibrationally excited Br 2 − ion occurs in the subsequent collision with the K + ion and this provides the possibility of the reaction under discussion.
