Abstract

Abstract A new cobalt(II) complex {[Co(μ-4,4′-bpy)(4,4′-bpy) 2(NCS) 2]·2DMF} n (4,4′-bpy=4,4′-bipyridine, DMF=dimethyl formamide) has been prepared and characterized. Its X-ray crystal structure determination reveals that each cobalt(II) ion is in a distorted octahedral environment coordinated by six nitrogen atoms: two from NCS −, two from bpy as terminal ligands, and two from bpy as bridge ligands. The structure consists of a very straight 1D chain via bpy, not the well known 2D sheets supported by co-ordination or hydrogen bonds. The influence of the solvent DMF on the molecular architecture has also been discussed. Magnetic susceptibility measurements in the range 77−300 K show very weak ferromagnetic exchange between the cobalt(II) ions (J=0.70 cm −1).
