Abstract

Record level- The original Thompson Journal of his 1871-1872 trip through the Grand Canyon is housed at the New York Public Library. This document is a transcript of the original created by Marty Anderson. The material focuses on Powell's 2nd exploration, which ran down the Green River to the Colorado River, then down it to Kanab Creek. In addition to his comments about the many rapids through which the survey descended and the other hardships and frustrations endured, Thompson describes the landscape, geology, terrain, and many other aspects of the journey. He also discusses meetings and conversations with both Mormon settlers and local Native Americans.
