Particle dynamics in the viscoelastic medium under steady and oscillatory shear flow

In dilute suspensions, the motion of particles dispersed in the solvent with shear rate dependent rheological properties was studied under steady and oscillatory shear flow. The solvents were selected strong and weak shear-thinning fluid and shear-thickening fluid. Electrically neutral spherical particles of micron size were well dispersed in the solvents. Particles behavior under steady and oscillatory shear flow equipped with parallel plate geometry were observed by flow visualization. Microstructure development of particles was observed by commercial parallel flow cell and microscopy and visualization set-up on the rheometer was designed to get the image of macroscopic structure and rheological properties simultaneously. By comparing the degree of shear thinning, the phenomena of particle alignment under steady and oscillatory shear flow might be different. Through the study of shear thickening fluid, it showed that high Wi could not warrant the on-set of the particle alignment. Finally, microscopic structure of particle alignment proceeded macroscopic structure of ring formation and ring migration. * Note: The text above is the abstract of the thesis.
