Abstract

Abstract In an attempt to overcome the resolution problems of the Morrison second-differential method of determining ionization and appearance potentials from ionization efficiency data the procedure of taking a third derivative has been investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The results obtained indicate that the technique assists in revealing structure in the second-derivative curves and, in most cases studied, permits estimation of onset potentials which are in good agreement with photoionization and monoenergetic electron impact values. The limitations of the technique are discussed.
