In the debate about ethnic and religious minority accommodation, normative arguments are usually developed and deployed in difficult exchanges about self and others. This chapter considers puzzles and paradoxes of toleration in contemporary political theory and the difficult place of toleration in debates on cultural pluralism. It introduces understandings of positions ‘beyond’ toleration that continue to be particularly contentious. This introductory chapter suggests that new socio-political developments and new understandings of what expressions of cultural diversity are acceptable and unacceptable need to be met with an interest in the crucial issues and dynamics in between the various kinds of acceptance.
