Abstract

The 27 countries involved in the US visa waiver programme have been thrown a one-year lifeline following intense political wrangling over the US-imposed deadline to begin rolling out chip-based passports. With the 26 October 2005 fast approaching, and the majority of countries unable to comply, the USA said that the deadline will be shifted to 26 October 2006.
