Preparation of children for hospitalization and surgery: A review of the literature

Abstract The purpose of this article is to present an overview of the literature on preparation of children for hospitalization and surgery. The three most commonly reported preparation methods (hospital tours, play therapy, and filmed modeling) are reviewed. The research on preparation reveals that younger children tend to benefit from programs utilizing play therapy, dolls, and puppets, whereas older children will benefit from verbal explanations, diagrams, and audiovisual aids. Nurses familarization with and utilization of various techniques of preparation will result in more individualized care.
