Abstract

Abstract True single atomic layer depth-resolved, equilibrium composition depth profiles have been obtained for the (001) plane of five Pt-Rh alloys. All of them show an enrichment of Rh in the top surface layer and a depletion of Rh in the second layer. Rh segregation agrees with a bond breaking theory while the depletion of Rh in the second layer may indicate an oscillatory structure in the single ion potential in the surface layers.
