Abstract

Abstract The high incidence of absenteeism from low back pain in heavy manual workers may be related more to the effect of low back pain than to its cause. This review examines the relationship between heavy work and both PID and degenerative low back pain disorders, concluding that hard work in adult life and early working life probably reduces the incidence of disc prolapse, but increases the risk of symptoms from degenerative disease. Hard work probably has physiological benefits and has a long-term role in rehabilitation.
