Structural defects in Bi2Sr2Can−1CunO2 n+4(n= 2,3) superconductors induced by 3 MeV electron irradiation

Abstract

Abstract Highly oriented Bi 2Sr 2Ca n−1 Cu n O 2 n+4 ( n = 2,3) pellets have been sequentially irradiated up to 2 × 10 18/cm 2 with 3 MeV electrons at 370 K, and the temperature dependence of the resistivity, the X-ray line broadening and the Auger intensity have been measured. For the sample of n = 3, electron irradiation forms a disordered portion on the grain surface, which leads to the reduction of the superconducting grain connection, the weak link. For the sample of n = 2, the disordered portion hardly enhances on the grain surface with the maximum irradiation dose, which suggests that oxygen deficiency could occur on the BiO layers of the incommensurate modulated structure.
