Abstract

Abstract LaB 6.06 and CeB 6.07 crystals were obtained by the floating zone method. Their thermionic emission properties were compared with those of the stoichiometric crystal cathodes. Increasing boron content decreased the evaporation rate, which determines the life time of the cathodes, without influence on the emission properties. Accordingly, composition control was found to be very effective for extending the lifetime of the cathodes.
