Abstract

Abstract This paper describes the detailed design and construction phases of the original monolith hydraulic weighing system lysimeter, the inherent difficulties encountered, and the modification and conversion of the lysimeter to the electronic transducer assembly. Accompanying test data with respect to sensitivity, response time and differential loading characteristics support the premise that the electronic load-cell design has inherent maintenance and operational advantages over the hydraulic transducer lysimeter. In the desert environment, comparison of the yearly evapotranspiration rate of the creosote plot in the lysimeter to the water-balance measurements also support the accuracy and reliability of an electronic load-cell design.
