Abstract

Abstract Using methods of conformai field theory, we develop a theory of multiple scattering at surface critical points and apply it to the case of low energy electron diffraction (LEED). An explicit general expression for the scattering intensity near a superstructure beam at a phase transition in the Ising universality class is obtained. The dependence on long range effects, due to critical fluctuations, and short range effects that depend on scattering conditions and certain field theoretic quantities are separated. We evaluate the beam center intensity via an s-wave model calculation to determine the main features and dependencies, in particular the conditions under which the IV curves (intensity versus electron energy) at criticality are significantly different from the well-ordered (low temperature) state.
