Abstract

Abstract This article summarizes the applications and limitations of cell and tissue culture methods in the neurological sciences. Dissociated cultures, slice cultures, cell lines, inducible pluripotent stem cells, and direct production of neurons from peripheral cells are discussed. Advantages and disadvantages of these various approaches are evaluated and in particular a need for developing methods to study adult human brain cells is highlighted. Cell and tissue culture methods have had and will continue to have major impacts on our understanding of brain function and in the development of new therapies to treat neurological disorders.
