Abstract

Summary The possibility of endogenous nore pinephrine (NE) participating in the process of physiological arousal has been studied by ascertaining the effects of depletion of brain NE on the sleep cycle, by temporary reversal of the effects of brain NE depletion through intracerebral microinjections of NE, and by the effects on sleep cycle of another means capable of inducing intracerebral blood pressure rise comparable to the blood pressure-increasing effects of NE. The results warrant the conclusion that endogenous NE partakes in the process of physiological arousal by direct effect on intracerebral neurons.
