Abstract

Abstract A set of plane lattice-frames composed of circular-section members and having a solidity ratio of 0.226 has been tested over a range of subcritical Reynolds numbers in uniform flows with turbulence intensities of 3.9, 7.5 and 13.6%. Neither Reynolds number nor turbulence had a major effect on the drag coefficients or shielding factors of the frames, but there was a tendency for the drag coefficient to increase slightly with increase in turbulence of the flow, and for shielding factors for two-frame combinations to decrease with increasing Reynolds number. Increased turbulence affected the distribution of velocity within the wake region; the maximum velocity-defect varied with distance aft of the frames in accordance with simple mixing-length theory.
