Abstract

Abstract Excess molar enthalpies H E m of { xKF+(1- x)NdF 3}(1) were measured calorimetrically at the temperature T = 1220 K and 1430 K. The results have been used to calculate the limiting excess partial molar enthalpy of NdF 3. The large negative H E.∞ m(NdF 3) = -(73±7) kJ·mol -1 indicates that the main contributions to the excess enthalpy arise from the Coulombic and polarization energy. Also its dependence on the relative ionic potential of K + and Nd 3+ agrees well with the empirical linear relation proposed by Kleppa for a large number of fluoride systems. The results have also been analysed in terms of formation of complex ions in the liquid mixtures.
