Plasmon in oxides of the La2CuO4family — infrared reflectivity in polarized light

Abstract

Infrared reflection spectra of oriented samples of La2CuO4 in polarizedlight are reported and analysed. The anisotropy is found quite similar to that previously reported for a single crystal of La2NiO4. Whereas the plasmon found in the basal a-b plane increases rapidly with temperature in the latter compound, no such dependence is found in the copper compound. This fact together with the low plasma frequency found in La2CuO4 raises the problem of the carrier effective mass and suggests strong electron-phonon coupling.
