Abstract

Abstract The i.r. and Raman spectra of the rare-earth borates from Sm to Yb (including Y) have been obtained. The proposed interpretation of the spectra favours the structure suggested by bradley et al. [6] in which the borate ions form a B 3O 9 ring. The interpretation is based on normal co-ordinate calculations using the Wilson FG matrix method with a GVFF.
