Abstract

Abstract We study the elastic interaction of an anisotropic point defect with the surface of an isotropic medium. The defect is assumed to have two identical principal axes. It is shown by a general argument that the lowest elastic energy occurs when one of the principal axis of the defect is directed perpendicular to the surface. This conclusion still holds in the presence of an uniform stress at the surface, but the principal axis directed normal to the surface may be different in presence or absence of the stress.
