Abstract

Publisher Summary Odorization helps in the detection of natural gas in air before it reaches combustible levels. Certain Federal pipeline safety regulations require combustible gases in pipelines to be detected at one-fifth of the lower explosive limit by a person with a normal sense of smell, either by the natural odor of the gas or by artificial odorization. Therefore, the proper odorization and odorants are important for pipeline safety. Odorization is a primary concern for any gas transmission company. A successful odorization program includes accurate injection of the odorant, proper monitoring techniques, and complete record maintenance.. Important points that need to be considered during odorization are proper selection of the pipelines that require odorization; the detectable limits of gas odor; odorants and odorizing considerations; and monitoring a pipeline system to ensure that the odorization program is meeting the regulatory requirements.
