The anisotropy of the thermoelectric power of tin at low temperatures

Abstract

Abstract A study of the thermoelectric power of single crystal specimens of tin alloyed with some indium has been made in the temperature range 3.7°K to 9.0°K. The measured thermoelectric power has been separated into two terms, S e and S g, due to thermal diffusion of electrons and phonon drag respectively. The second term especially shows a considerable anisotropy, the magnitude varying between −3.5 × 10 −10 T 3 and +2.6 × 10 −10 T 3 for cos 2 ϕ ranging from zero to unity, where ϕ is the orientation of the crystal c-axis with respect to the sample axis. The measured values of the two terms lie close to straight lines on a graph of S e/ T and S g/ T 3 against cos 2ϕ.
