Abstract

Hitherto no historian has attempted to go over the events of captain Dreyfus's confinement in Devil Island (French Guyana), from April 14, 1895, to June 5, 1899. With the help of unpublished documents, the author describes the convict's everyday life, as well as the methods and reactions of the upper and lower grade civil servants. Obsessed as they were by a threefold appréhension : the kidnapping, escape or suicide of the convict, they converted the transportation penalty into such severe imprisonment, as seriously endangered the mind of one who was not guilty.
